CAFÉS & RESTAURANTS

Journal > CAFÉS & RESTAURANTS

From local places close to the island to a few favourites in Bergen, these are some of our favourite stops for good food, coffee, wine, and a little time around the table. Opening hours can change with the season, so we always recommend checking before you go.

BIOLOGEN HOTEL

Just “around the corner” from LILLØY LINDENBERG, Biologen Hotel is an easy local favourite for lunch, dinner, or a drink by the sea. The building dates back to 1922 and was once a marine biology research station, now restored as a modern boutique hotel on Herdla. Their kitchen focuses on local ingredients, with a good wine list and a setting that feels very much of the coast. Think sea views, warm interiors, and food rooted in the surrounding landscape.

ÆRA KAFÉ & FETEVARE

ÆRA Kafé & Fetevare is more than a café. It is a small, thoughtful place for lunch, baked goods, coffee, and good drinks, with a deli offering delicacies from Norway and further away. It is a lovely stop if you are passing through Kleppestø or making your way to or from the island. Their opening hours are limited, so check before you go.

LOLA

LOLA is a modern bistro in Bergen, set in a building from the 1800s and made for anything from a glass of wine to a long dinner. The food changes with the seasons and what their suppliers have available, with small and larger plates across fish, meat, and vegetables. The wine list is also a reason to go, with a mix of classic and modern bottles from around the world. Cosy, generous, and very easy to settle into for the evening.

MARKEN KAFFE

Close to the train station, Marken Kaffe is a good Bergen stop for specialty coffee, baked goods, small plates, and wine. It opened in autumn 2025 and already feels like the kind of place you can slip into for a quick coffee or stay a little longer. They also host tastings, concerts, and small happenings, so it is worth checking what is on if you are in the city.

AMATEUR

Amateur is a relaxed, slightly edgy spot in Bergen for seasonal cooking and good drinks. The menu changes often, depending on the weather, the mood, and what is available, which feels very Bergen in the best way. Expect simple but thoughtful dishes, cooked from scratch, with a little surprise and a lot of flavour. A good one for lunch, dinner, or an unplanned evening that turns into something more.
